Posted on November 07, 2018

Meet the winner of the OIE Rinderpest Challenge, 4th year Veterinary Science student Muhammed Moola!
He came first place with 223 420 points and South Africa came first with 505 210 points. Besides bragging rights he gets to attend OIE General Session in Paris in 2019!

The purpose of the game was to discover the cause of a new Rinderpest outbreak.

What is Rinderpest?* The only animal disease to have been eradicated as of 2011!

According to the OIE website:

"Rinderpest, also known as cattle plague, is a highly contagious viral disease affecting cloven-hoofed animals (mainly cattle and buffalo). The classical form of rinderpest is one of the most lethal diseases of cattle, and can have a catastrophic effect in naïve herds. In the past, it had terrible consequences on food security and livelihoods, particularly in developing countries, where rinderpest was responsible for famines and devastating economic losses. Rinderpest has been known since the first domestication of livestock and is reported to have originated in Central Eurasia, spreading later to Middle East, Europe, Africa and Asia, following trade and migration routes. Rinderpest triggered extensive famines in Africa and hindered agricultural development in Asia. After decades of internationally concerted efforts to eradicate this disease, rinderpest was officially declared eradicated from the planet by the OIE and FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) in 2011."

More on the game:
"Players will be both in the shoes of a veterinarian and a laboratory technician. As a veterinarian, the player will have to detect rinderpest among other similar diseases or not-so-similar pathologies called distractors on a worldwide scope. Firstly, the player will have to choose a case on the world map and then make differential diagnoses based on clinical signs, sometimes shared with rinderpest. Once the examination is done, the player will make a tentative diagnosis that will be validated.
As worldwide renowned expert, the player will travel the world to stop the propagation of rinderpest. The player will have to use acquired knowledge to solve veterinary cases and help with RVCM management while trying to understand what caused the reappearance of rinderpest"- OIE Website
