Nozipho Dlamini was inaugurated as the first black female President of the South African Colliery Managers’ Association (SACMA) for 2022 at the association’s Annual General Meeting, held at the Johannesburg Country Club in Auckland Park on 25 February 2022. This follows her term as Vice-President of the country’s professional body for coal managers in 2021.

Dlamini is Technical Services Manager at Thungela Resources Limited’s Greenside Colliery. She is an experienced mining engineer, having worked at Sasol Mining and Anglo American. She graduated from the University of Pretoria with a BEng (Mining Engineering) degree in 2007, followed by an honours degree in Technology Management and a Master in Technology Management degree from the University’s Graduate School of Technology Management (GSTM). She is a loyal alumna of the Department and the University. She also serves on the Department’s Mining Engineering Advisory Board and is a member of the University’s Council.

With more than 14 years’ mining experience, she has held various management positions, from underground manager to business improvement manager, section manager and technical services manager.

During her inaugural address, Dlamini stated that she is both humbled by the confidence SACMA has shown in her, and aware of the responsibility and privilege she has to lead this prestigious organisation, which celebrates its 45th anniversary this year. “The association has stood the test of time and has navigated major transitions in the country. This is a testament to the resilience and strength of the people who have led it, and I am honoured and proud to join the ranks of these great leaders.”

The Department salutes Dlamini for this achievement. She follows in the tracks of eight alumni of the Department who have had the honour of being President of this illustrious association over the past 20 years.
