Staff in the Department of Mining Engineering

The Department’s prime resource is its teaching staff. Staff members are encouraged to improve their teaching and research skills, remain active in industry and contribute to departmental administration and community service. Contracted-in industry experts and guest lecturers participate in the Department’s activities on an ongoing basis and keep students and staff in touch with industry requirements and trends.

The Department is supported by one honorary and four extraordinary professors. These seasoned academics assist the Department with the supervision of postgraduate research, specifically as it relates to ventilation engineering, rock engineering, explosives engineering and mining economics. To ensure sustainability, capacity is expanded through contract staff, part-time lecturers, chair-holders, administrative support staff and full-time postgraduate students, who are appointed on a year-to-year basis to assist lecturers in their daily teaching responsibilities. This brings the Department’s total component to 35. This would not have been possible without generous support from our industry partners.
