Mining Engineering HOD appointed to Council of global mining body

Prof Ronny Webber-Youngman, Head of the University of Pretoria’s Department of Mining Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment and Information Technology, has been appointed to the Council of the international Society of Mining Professors (SOMP).

This global academic society represents mining academics all over the world. It is committed to making a significant contribution to the future of the minerals discipline internationally. The society’s main goal is to guarantee the scientific, technical, academic and professional knowledge that is required to ensure a sustainable supply of minerals for mankind. It facilitates information exchange, research and teaching partnerships, as well as other collaborative activities among its members.

Prof Webber-Youngman’s appointment was approved at the Society’s 31st Annual General Meeting (AGM), which was held in Medellin, Columbia, from 19 to 25 September 2021. Announcing the appointment of Prof Webber-Youngman as Council member, Vladislav Kecojevic, the Society’s Secretary-General, noted the Society’s appreciation of Prof Webber-Youngman’s national and international leadership, and commended him on his service and contribution to the Society, particularly as President of the Society for 2013/14 and his organisation of the Society’s AGM in Pretoria in 2014.

Prof Webber-Youngman looks forward to supporting the interests of mining academics in South Africa and on the continent in this important forum.
