Posted on March 15, 2021

The latest edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject for 2021, which ranks science, mathematics and technology courses from seven local universities, compared to the best in the world, has placed mineral and mining engineering at the University of Pretoria in 48th position.

The global QS rankings identify which subjects are a particular university’s unique strengths compared to international competitors. It also evaluates the university’s academic reputation, research output and citations, and the results of surveys of employers and academics.

The Department of Mining Engineering, as one of the core role players in the University’s mining cluster, plays a significant role in mining teaching, learning and research, and contributes new ways of innovating for the future. It is one of the country’s leading departments of mining engineering, and plays an important role in the mining industry by providing world-class leaders who serve the mining industry with distinction.

The overarching goal of the Department is to enable the mining industry to transition from being reactive and compliant to becoming resilient in issues related to safety, health, environmental sustainability, social responsibility and community management through well-structured and committed postgraduate education and research. It is dedicated to visibly aligning its teaching and research objectives with industry needs.

The Department collaborates with various stakeholders in the mining industry such as the Minerals Council South Africa, the Mandela Mining Precinct and the Mine Health and Safety Council, which makes it a key participant in future innovations in the mining industry. Through the generous financial support of its industry partners, the Department has been able to develop world-class facilities. These include the Virtual Reality Centre for Mine Design, the first centre of its kind in Africa to be housed at a university, which enables the Department to simulate a range of mining functions in a low-risk, high-impact learning environment.

Collaborative and cross-cutting research initiatives conducted across the University’s nine faculties, including its Graduate School for Technology Management (GSTM), are an essential element of the University of Pretoria’s mining footprint, which is part of the Department’s long-term strategy to become a world leader in mining research for practical implementation.
