This body represents mining academics all over the world, and is committed to making a significant contribution to the future of the minerals discipline internationally. Its main goal is to guarantee the scientific, technical, academic and professional knowledge that is required to ensure a sustainable supply of minerals for mankind. It facilitates information exchange, research and teaching partnerships, as well as other collaborative activities among its members.

In honour of its 30th anniversary, it has launched an anniversary publication to celebrate this milestone. The Department wishes to share this publication with its alumni, friends and fellow academics, as well as with the broader mining community, as it congratulates SOMP on all that it has achieved over the past three decades.
