This course, offered in collaboration with Enterprises University of Pretoria, was presented by George Olivier, Director and Principal Mining Engineer at VBKom Consulting Engineers and an alumnus of the Department of Mining Engineering at UP. He has vast experience in operational mine planning and design in various commodities across the African continent.

This continuing education programme is a unique, comprehensive short course, based on the undergraduate and postgraduate Surface Mine Design Engineering courses presented in the Mining Engineering degree programmes. It presents the basic theory of open-pit mine design and its application, starting with the geological resource model, through to the reserve statement, including all aspects of the value chain.

It forms part of a portfolio of short courses developed by the Department of Mining Engineering that focuses not only on technical know-how, but also considerations of social impact and political feasibility. They are aimed at developing smart, long-lasting solutions
for society.
