This is the ideal time for members of the rock mechanics community to take advantage of the opportunity presented by the South African Institute of Rock Engineering (SANIRE) on 30 March 2020 to watch Prof Francois Malan deliver the 29^th Online Lecture of the International Society for Rock Mechanics (ISRM) at 10:00 GMT. The title of the lecture is “Rockburst support in shallow-dipping tabular slopes at great depth”.

Prof Malan is a specialist in rock engineering and Associate Professor in the University of Pretoria’s Department of Mining Engineering (and Director of the Department’s Mining Resilience Research Centre). He has received several awards for his contributions to rock engineering in South Africa, including five gold and silver medals from the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, and three Salamon awards from the SANIRE for best publications. The ISRM awarded him the Rocha medal in 2001, and in 2017 he presented the Franklin Lecture at the AfriRock Symposium in Cape Town.
