The Youth A.I. Object Recognition Programming Workshop and Learning Showcase, which took place in January 2025 on the University of Pretoria, Mamelodi campus, is a joint initiative of the Department of Computing and the Service-Learning and Leadership Office at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU). This initiative aims to raise learners' awareness of the impact of the information and digital divide while promoting STEM literacy among youth. PolyU students shared their knowledge of machine learning and block programming with younger peers in Mamelodi, focusing on visual impairment and accessibility. By the end of the 4-day workshop, participants had created their own unique A.I. solutions to help visually impaired individuals (VIPs) address various daily challenges. To enhance the learning experience and keep it engaging, PolyU students organised fun activities throughout the workshop to foster creativity and improve the effectiveness of the learners' prototypes. Teams had the opportunity to showcase their innovative projects and compete for awards that recognised their collaborative efforts in designing the most attractive and functional assistive technology. The best projects were selected based on their creativity, usability, and potential impact on improving the daily lives of VIPs in our community.
