Fourth-year occupational therapy students from the University of Pretoria had an engaging and interactive session with early childhood development (ECD) practitioners of Mamelodi, focusing on the creative idea of making toys from recycled materials. The workshop was designed to foster creative thinking and resourcefulness, highlighting the importance of sustainability in playtime activities. During the session, the students demonstrated various techniques for transforming everyday items, such as plastic bottles, cardboard boxes, and fabric scraps, into fun and educational toys. The ECD practitioners were enthusiastic participants, sharing their insights on how these homemade toys can enhance children's learning experiences and development. The collaboration also emphasised the therapeutic benefits of crafting and play, underscoring how these activities can support motor skills, creativity, and social interaction among young children. By the end of the session, participants had not only gained valuable skills but also built a stronger bond between the therapy students and the practitioners, setting the stage for future collaborative projects aimed at enriching childhood development through innovative and sustainable practices.
