The art seminar at the Mamelodi campus was a vibrant gathering, marked by stimulating discussions and insightful presentations. Puleng Plessie, Curator for Education and Mediation from the Javett Art Centre at the University of Pretoria, led a compelling session on Professional Practice in the Arts. Her insights on navigating a career in the arts provided valuable guidance to aspiring artists and arts practitioners, emphasizing the importance of networking, mentorship, and continuous learning.
Following Plessie's session, local artist Vincent Molepo took the stage to share his perspective on the state of art in Mamelodi. His passion for the community was evident as he highlighted both the challenges and the opportunities for local artists. Molepo addressed issues such as access to resources and support, while showcasing the rich cultural heritage and artistic talent that Mamelodi has to offer. His engaging anecdotes inspired many attendees, urging them to take pride in their identity and harness their creativity to tell their own stories.
The final segment featured Hannes Engelbrecht, who delved into the interconnectedness of arts, heritage, and tourism. He provided a thought-provoking analysis of how art can serve as a catalyst for cultural tourism, enhancing both community identity and economic development. Overall, the seminar fostered a spirit of collaboration and innovation, leaving participants energized and motivated to contribute to the evolving art scene in Mamelodi. The exchange of ideas and experiences among the speakers and attendees underscored the potential for the arts to transform communities and build bridges across diverse cultures.
