The Mamelodi Referral System model was developed in 2019 from the student academic development and excellence model (SADEM). Its purpose is to provide the management with a systematic approach to manage the ECPs. This was soon followed by the development of the database system that was to support the data-driven approach of the model. This model has been used for two semesters in 2020 and has been invaluable in managing the Extended Curriculum Programmes amidst the pandemic in ensuring that all students are supported, and student success is not compromised. The model leverages the expertise of faculty members in providing a holistic view of student’s academic wellness which is used to inform much of the data-driven decisions and interventions. The initial implementation of this model was focused largely on student success in a tertiary education environment, but towards the end of 2020, an adaptation to the Pre-University Academy was done to support the management of academic programmes in a similar manner.

To support a data-lead management of the Pre-University Academy, the Community Engagement Tracking and Management System was developed and deployed in 2019 and continues to support the activities of the academy. This system supports various activities of the PUA such as facilitating the applications process, tutor management, logistics, teacher requirements, Career Hub, research mandate for the community-based research office, and so on.
