Summary

I joined the University of Pretoria in 2007 after six years in industry. I completed his MSc in 2010 and PhD in 2014, got his Y2 NRF rating in 2019, and became an associate professor in 2020. I am an engineering geologist and hydrogeologist, and have a special interest in different fluids. My work was on a jet fuel leak that remained above water as a light non-aqueous phase liquid. My research focus is on the vadose zone looking specifically into highly variable unsaturated flow through soil, fractured rock, karst, the soil-rock interface, and anthropogenic and urban impacts. I am now continuing the work with the university's capillary pressure mercury system (CPMS) where nitrogen and mercury are used to determine the porosity of rock core.

I am involved in various projects and endeavours on socioeconomic development and environment monitoring, and he is a hydrogeologist in the DANIDA funded project titled Enhancing Safe Groundwater Use in South Africa (ESGUSA) in Polokwane, and I was project leader of a socioeconomic water project referred to as the Timbavati Water Forum.

He is past president of the South African National Chapter of the International Association of Hydrogeologists, past chair of the Ground Water Division of the Geological Society of South Africa, member of the South African Institute of Engineering and Environmental Geologists, fellow of the Geological Society of South Africa, and congress chair for the 2023 50th congress of the International Association of Hydrogeologists in South Africa, and is on the local organising committee of the African Regional Congress in Windhoek in 2025 of the International Institute for Engineering and Environmental Geologists.
