As the 2024/25 term reaches its halfway mark, Law House at the University of Pretoria’s Faculty of Law reflects on a period marked by purposeful leadership, meaningful student engagement, and collaborative growth. Under the guidance of the current executive committee, every initiative has been designed to build community, support academic and professional development, and foster inclusivity within the Faculty.
From academic workshops and professional panels to celebratory gatherings and community outreach, Law House has led with intention—creating a supportive and vibrant environment for all law students.
Law House recognises that student life extends beyond academic performance. The committee has worked to create spaces for students to connect, reflect, and thrive socially and intellectually—laying the groundwork for a strong, inclusive community.
The term launched on 30 October 2024 with the Final-Year LLB Dinner, hosted in collaboration with the Dean’s Office. This special event celebrated the achievements of the Class of 2024 while offering encouragement and reflection through inspiring addresses from faculty members, legal professionals, and wellness experts.
To support first-year students during their transition to university life, Law House introduced a Virtual Bingo Game as part of orientation. This creative and interactive initiative introduced newcomers to key campus locations and resources while helping them build early connections in a relaxed, social setting.
In February, Law House brought together leaders from across the Faculty’s student organisations for a Society Social at Adlers. The evening, which included a lively quiz night, was attended by members of the Constitutional Tribunal, Women in Law, SDAP, and SLSJ. It served as a platform for collaboration, leadership bonding, and the forging of new partnerships.
On Workers’ Day 2025, Law House facilitated an educational visit to the Constitutional Court for first-year students. The excursion provided an opportunity for students to engage with South Africa’s highest court, deepening their understanding of the judicial system and enhancing their classroom learning through real-world experience.
A highlight of the term was the Faculty Festival, hosted on 29 and 30 April 2025. With a glamorous Hollywood theme, the festival balanced celebration and career development. Day one featured musical performances, food stalls, games, and a fashion show—bringing student life to the forefront. Day two shifted the focus to professional growth with a legal careers panel featuring speakers from corporate law, research, compliance, and finance sectors. The event captured Law House’s dual mission: to celebrate student identity while preparing future legal professionals.
Law House also collaborated with Spoor & Fisher and the Pretoria Attorneys Association to host a Mentorship Workshop. This event connected students with legal practitioners and provided insights into intellectual property law, career navigation, and the importance of mentorship in the legal field.
In keeping with its commitment to community engagement, Law House partnered with the STARS Mentorship Programme on RAG of Hope Day (22 February 2025). Their eco-conscious craft stall showcased handmade items from recycled materials, while over 60 non-perishable food items were collected for donation. Interactive games created a festive, meaningful experience rooted in service and sustainability.
Law House also marked Pride Month by collaborating with UP & Out for a Movie Night and Discussion. The event created a safe space to explore LGBTQIA+ identity through film and dialogue, highlighting the importance of inclusion, advocacy, and representation within the legal profession.
The second half of the Law House term promises continued momentum. On 8 August 2025, Law House will host the Women in Law x Law House Panel, sponsored by Webber Wentzel. This empowering event will feature distinguished women in the legal profession sharing their experiences and insights on leadership, mentorship, and gender equity.
Law House will also present the Leaply x Bowmans Professional Branding Workshop, a hands-on session focused on building standout CVs, optimising LinkedIn profiles, and preparing for clerkships and interviews.
Reflecting on the term, Law House Chairperson Ms Sanjana:
“As this term draws to a close, I look back with immense pride and gratitude for what we’ve achieved as a collective. From celebrating our community through events like the Faculty Festival and Society Social, to empowering students through mentorship workshops and professional development initiatives, this year has been one of purpose and impact.”
She added that balancing logistical challenges with creativity and ensuring inclusivity at every stage shaped a stronger, more united Law House leadership team.
As Law House prepares for the months ahead, the 2024/25 executive committee remains committed to its mission: to lead with purpose, amplify student voices, and leave a lasting legacy of connection, empowerment, and intentionality within the Faculty of Law.
