On Friday, November 29, 2024, the Faculty of Law at the University of Pretoria conducted a historic networking event dubbed "Bridging Theory and Practice: A Meet and Greet between the PSA, UP Law, and the Judiciary." This event symbolises the beginning of a strategic relationship between the Pretoria Society of Advocates (PSA), the Faculty of Law, and the Judiciary, with the objective of improving legal knowledge sharing and professional development.

The event commenced with a brief message of welcome from Professor Charles Maimela, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Law and programme director. He introduced the Dean of the Faculty of Law, Professor Elsabe Schoeman, who gave a welcome address and established the tone for the occasion. Her remarks emphasized the importance of collaboration in bridging academic theory and practical legal application and creating innovation and quality in the profession.

Soon after the welcome remarks, Advocate Gerhard Cilliers SC, Chairperson of the Pretoria Society of Advocates, established the foundation for the collaboration. His speech focused on how this collaboration fits into the greater goals of improving legal education and addressing contemporary issues in the profession.

Judge Norman Davis of the High Court of South Africa's Gauteng Division shared his vision for the collaboration. Judge Davis, drawing on his considerable judicial experience, explained how the collaboration between the PSA, UP Law, and the Judiciary may develop the legal profession, improve research capacity, and provide a more comprehensive educational experience for future legal practitioners.

The formal sessions concluded with a vote of appreciation from Professor Schoeman, following which guests moved on to the much-anticipated networking event. Attendees sipped refreshments while engaging in meaningful conversations, making connections, and exploring prospects for future collaboration.

This collaboration promises to be a cornerstone in Pretoria's legal scene, bringing together eminent academics, judges, and legal practitioners to impact the future of the law.
