Celebrating Academic Excellence: Recap of the Matric Achievers Event at UP Law

As per custom, the University of Pretoria's Faculty of Law hosted a celebratory lunch to honour the top 11 matriculants who will be joining the number one faculty as the class of 2024. The Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Law Prof. Charles Maimela welcomed the guests of honour, our Top Achievers “I would like to welcome you as our star students to the number one faculty”. He also commended the students on their academic success and welcoming them to the faculty.

The matriculant class of 2023 worked hard to produce astonishing results with an average pass rate ranging between 88 to 93 percent an Outstanding achievement placed at level 7 the highest ranking for the South African national senior certificate. UP Law continues to attract students from the lengths and breadth of South Africa. This year our diverse group of top achiever’s hail from Gauteng, North West, Free State, Western Cape, and Mpumalanga attesting to the faculty being a truly diverse learning environment. 

The Dean of the Faculty of Law, Prof. Elsabe Schoeman extended thanked the achievers for choosing the number one faculty law on the continent UP Law. She emphasized the faculty's commitment to nurturing not only academic excellence but also a dedication to social justice and community contribution. The dean also highlighted the faculty's proud tradition of mooting excellence, both nationally and internationally.

Exuding confidence and enthusiasm the students including Lauren van Zyl, Abigael Barnard, Auerello Pillay, Botshelo Tlale, Lisa Fuller, Melokuhle Buthelezi, Nosihle Masinga, Oarabile Mothusi, Tumiso Nkosi and Treasure Mampane stood up to give self-introductions and share reasons they chose to pursue their higher education studies at University of Pretoria, Faculty of Law. One of the students Botshelo Tlale from the North West shared that she chose UP law because it is known for producing the best legal practitioners and it is the best in Africa”. 

Prof Phumudzo Munyai, representing the Heads of Departments, offered some insights and guidance to the matric achievers as they embark on their academic journey at the University of Pretoria.Followed by Prof Maimela who expressed pride and optimism for the future of the students. The event celebrated not only past accomplishments but also the boundless potential of these bright young minds. As they begin their academic journey at the University of Pretoria, they do so with the support and admiration of a community dedicated academicss, professional staff, senior students and other university support services to guide them to realise success in their studies.

The Matric Achievers were given a UP Way welcome; we are confident the achievers will use the transformative power of education to achieve their academic goals and make a meaningful contribution to the legal fraternity & society.
