The University of Pretoria is ranked first in Africa for Human Rights Law research by EduRank. EduRank is an independent metric-based ranking of 14,131 universities from 183 countries. This is an excellent achievement for the University of Pretoria and the Faculty of Law (UP Law).

In today's rapidly evolving world, research plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of society. The University of Pretoria strives to excel in research, pushing boundaries, and creating innovative solutions. This achievement is a testament to its unwavering dedication to academic excellence and highlights its commitment and contribution to the advancement of knowledge. 

This ranking does not come as a surprise as UP Law currently employs approximately 70 dedicated full-time academics, of which 72% have doctoral degrees in various fields of law. The faculty members, renowned for their expertise and passion, have made significant contributions in various fields of study. Through our ground-breaking research, we have expanded the frontiers of knowledge and addressed critical societal challenges.

Furthermore, UP Law has a dedicated Centre for Human Rights, internationally recognised for excellence in human rights law in Africa. The Centre for Human Rights is uniquely positioned as both an academic department and a non-governmental organisation. The Centre is considered a leader in human rights education in Africa. The Centre works towards a greater awareness of human rights, the wide dissemination of publications on human rights in Africa, and the improvement of the rights of women, people living with HIV, indigenous peoples, sexual minorities, and other disadvantaged or marginalised persons or groups across the continent.

Additionally, UP Law fosters a collaborative research culture, encouraging interdisciplinary collaboration and knowledge sharing. The university creates a rich and diverse research ecosystem by bringing experts from different fields together. This collaborative approach not only enhances the quality of research but also facilitates the development of innovative solutions to complex problems.

Being ranked first place in Human Rights Law research is a remarkable achievement for the University and UP Law.
