Faculty of Law professor appointed as a member of the Financial Sector Conduct Authority Consumer Advisory Panel

Posted on August 07, 2023

The Faculty of Law (UP Law) is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Sylvia Papadopoulos as a member of the Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA) Consumer Advisory Panel.

Since the FSCA is mandated to promote fair customer treatment by financial institutions, provide financial education and promote financial literacy, a better understanding of consumer perspectives is essential. The FSCA Panel aims to strengthen consumer representation in the financial sector’s regulatory environment, protect the rights and interests of financial customers, and instil public confidence and trust in South Africa’s financial sector. Suitably qualified experts and representatives, which included representatives of consumer associations and NGOs, consumer advocates, academics, and financial literacy experts, were invited to apply to serve on a new Consumer Advisory Panel (Panel).

Commenting on her appointment, Prof Papadopoulos said: ‘I look forward to working with the FSCA and other members of the panel to support the FSCA's mission. As someone who works in the realm of technology and law, my passion lies in safeguarding consumer interests.  With AI emerging at this intersection, we embrace the opportunity to amplify consumers’ voices and create a more equitable future for all.’

She joined the Department of Mercantile Law in 2004 and teaches in the fields of payment methods and ICT, and cyber law. She has published several peer-reviewed articles and has presented papers at national and international conferences.

As part of the Panel, she will regularly engage with the FSCA, providing inputs and guidance on regulation, enforcement, research and policy development.

The Faculty of Law would like to congratulate Professor Papadopoulos on this achievement!
