More than 66 Law Faculty Students Honoured at the 2022 Spring Graduation

Posted on September 19, 2022

Over 66 UP Law students had their academic achievements acknowledged at the Spring graduation on 8 September 2022.

Emeritus Constitutional Justice Sisi Khampepe, Chancellor of the University of Pretoria, said in her speech: "A graduation date is a rite of passage; a milestone that landmarks the culmination of one phase in a person’s life and the beginning of a new and significant phase. The circumstances of that ending and beginning will differ from person to person.”

The faculty is proud to have bestowed 66 degrees during this year's event. There were 23 LLB degrees among them, while 34 Master's degrees and 9 Doctorates were awarded.

One of the Doctorates was awarded posthumously to the late Dr Moses Moeletsi, who sadly passed on before his final result could be communicated to him. Titled “The efficacy of the World Trade Organization dispute settlement mechanism: An African perspective”, the thesis investigated the reasons for African countries’ low level of participation in WTO dispute settlement. The study found the root cause to be the expensive and highly complicated system which posed a challenge to African countries ridden with the lack of resources, limited trade volumes, and economic power. The thesis concluded by making recommendations on various ways the system could be reformed to make it more developing country and Least Developed Country- friendly. We extend our sincere condolences to his family and trust that they will find comfort in the knowledge that his thesis will contribute to the scholarship in this area of the law.

Graduations mark the end of an often challenging but fulfilling academic journey. They are both a beginning and an end – the end of one academic endeavour and the beginning of another, while others enter the workforce or pursue a variety of opportunities ventures upon completion. Whatever the case may be, graduations are a joyous occasion where students reap the benefits of their hard work in celebration with fellow students.

As a faculty, we are exceptionally proud of our graduates and we wish them the very best for the future.
