Professor Van Zyl, who is Professor of Tax Law in the Department of Mercantile Law in the Faculty of Law, was recently appointed to serve on the African Tax Research Network (ATRN) Advisory Board for the term 2022 to 2024 at the ATRN Annual Congress that was held in Ghana on 5-7 September 2022.

A platform of choice for African tax research, ATRN was formed to identify potential synergies and linkages between academics and tax officials from African Tax Administration Forum countries. Hosted by the African Tax Administration Forum, the organisation aims to facilitate Africa's capacity to do credible tax policy, administration, law, and leadership research.

“It is an honour to be elected to serve on the ATRN advisory board and to represent South Africa among the world's leaders in tax policy, administration, law, and economics. The ATRN plays an important role in bridging the gap between academia and policy-makers”, expressed Prof Van Zyl.

Prof Van Zyl is a visiting professor at the Gujarat National Law University, India and has served as an advisor for the Davis Tax Committee. He is a member of the African Tax Administration Forum VAT Technical Committee and he serves on the Scientific Committee of the African Tax Research Network.

“As the Department of Mercantile Law, we congratulate and are immensely proud of Prof Van Zyl in this incredible appointment. We are confident that his work as ATRN board member will go a long way in raising the international profile of the Department and Faculty in line with our internationalisation `agenda” added Prof Phumudzo Munyai, Head of Department: Dept. of Mercantile Law.
