The African Coalition for Corporate Accountability (ACCA) is looking for a dedicated, creative, and energetic person who provide overall intellectual leadership to and be responsible for the operational management of the African Coalition for Corporate Accountability (ACCA), a coalition of more than 100 African organisations (mostly non-governmental organisations), working in the field of business and human rights on the continent. The Secretariat of ACCA is based in the Centre for Human Rights (CHR), Faculty of Law, University of Pretoria. The Project Manager: ACCA leads the ACCA secretariat, and reports to the ACCA Steering Committee and General Assembly and to the CHR, the host institution.
The successful candidate will be appointed on a temporary full-time basis, initially for a one-year contract. The contract may be renewed depending on available funding, and the incumbent’s satisfactory performance. This is an existing but vacant position in the Centre.
The responsibilities of the incumbent will include:
- Supporting the ACCA in the execution of its mandate;
- Overseeing ACCA’s management, including hiring, training and supervising consultants;
- Overseeing the activities and performance of the ACCA communications and development coordinator and any other ACCA staff;
- Assessing the partners’ needs and assist them in developing responses;
- Organising and facilitating logistics and organising related to regular ACCA-hosted meetings (such as the annual General Assembly and Steering Committee meetings and capacity building sessions);
- Overseeing communication between secretariat and the ACCA Steering Committee and ACCA membership;
- Overseeing project implementation, including budget oversight;
- Managing financial accounts and organizational budget;
- Assisting in all fundraising activities, including the writing and submission of funding proposals;
- Preparing for periodic reports and continuous liaison with donors;
- Representing ACCA at regional and international meetings or forums;
- Contributing to shaping and defining ACCA’s strategic vision and overall direction by preparing and presenting draft policy documents to the ACCA Steering Committee
- Assisting in coordinating ACCA members’ grassroots-based field campaigns, using the existing resources of member groups as well as developing new resources
- Developing advocacy campaigns to change the actions of corporations and African governments, in both legislative and administrative forums
- Engaging with AU bodies and specifically the Pan African Parliament;
- Designing advocacy tools (e.g. toolkits, comic books, video animation training manuals);
- Identifying gaps and opportunities in the business and human rights, and corporate accountability frameworks in Africa;
- Formulating strategies and project proposals to address those gaps through research and advocacy;
- Coordinating publication of ACCA research.
- A Master’s degree in a field of Human Rights related to Business and Human Rights;
- A total of four years’ professional experience in:
- Non-profit organisations (ideally in the field of business and human rights), advocacy campaigns, government offices, or relevant positions in the private sector;
- Fundraising for not-for-profit organisations from major donors, foundations, and members
- Familiarity with international and regional human rights systems and treaties, and international legal frameworks relevant to corporate accountability, including the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights
- Good knowledge of project planning and proposal writing, financial management, and project management;
- Excellent oral and writing skills in English;
- Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills;
- Highly motivated with confidence and the ability to be proactive, think quickly, and work independently;
- Enthusiasm for ACCA’s mission and campaigns;
- Negotiation skills;
- Ability to perform multiple tasks and consistently meet deadlines.
Added advantages and preferences:
- A Doctoral degree in a related field;
- A professional qualification in project management;
- Excellent oral and writing skills in French;
- Three years of working experience in:
- Coalition-based organisations;
- Pre-existing relationships within the NGO community, as well as with foundations, media, and relevant policymakers;
- A multicultural setting preferred;
- Knowledge of additional African Union languages, such as Swahili, Portuguese, or Arabic.

The all-inclusive remuneration package for this contract position will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines.
