PSLR bids goodbye to Editor-in-Chief, Phenyo Sekati, Senior Editor, Adelaide Chagopa, and the 2021 Editorial Board

The Faculty of Law at the University of Pretoria wishes to convey its appreciation to the 2021 Editorial Board of the Pretoria Student Law Review (PSLR) and its contributors for their dedication to the journal and its publication. The Faculty also extends a note of thanks to the Pretoria University Law Press (PULP) for annually publishing this journal.

Simultaneously, the PSLR bids goodbye to Editor-in-Chief, Phenyo Sekati, Senior Editor, Adelaide Chagopa, and the 2021 Editorial Board. This year, the PSLR published its Annual Edition with its first-ever Special Section on “Social Justice and COVID-19”. Additionally, and in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the journal’s pursuit towards expanding its visibility and level of accessibility, the PSLR has increased its online presence by developing its first independent website and logo, operating on the Open Journals System (OJS) platform.

“As a student-led and student-driven journal, we were presented with the unique challenge and opportunity to facilitate and maintain excellence through our published articles whilst creating a platform that is both approachable and appealing to aspiring authors and junior academics. The Special Section allowed students to discuss contemporary societal issues on a legal platform which ultimately led to us receiving the largest number of submissions since the journal’s inception. We hope that, through the OJS platform, the PSLR will continue to see an increase in innovative and quality submissions” says Sekati.

The 2021 PSLR Editorial Board was also the first of its kind as it constituted of both internal and external Editors who, through virtual engagement, worked together towards developing the journal and publishing its Annual Edition. In reflecting on her role on the Editorial Board, Chagopa notes that:

“Connection is an important thing. The PSLR Editorial Board is bound together by a desire to produce and nurture quality scholarship and discourse. Importantly, in our pursuit of excellence, we are bound by laughter, warmth, and affection – friendship. I will forever be grateful for my experience with the PSLR and for the connections I have made. I would encourage all present and future members of the Editorial Board to hold fast to our values, pursue excellence in writing and editing, have fun and, most importantly, to connect to the work, authors, and other editors – it is truly an invaluable experience.”

Sekati is a BCom Law graduate and final year LLB student at the University of Pretoria and Chagopa is an LLB and LLM graduate at the University of Witwatersrand and the University of Pretoria. Both Editors have been on the Editorial Board since 2020 and have, during their respective terms, facilitated the publication of the PSLR’s thickest and most dynamic editions under the guardianship of Prof Gustav Muller and Ms Ilana le Roux. In her final statement as the Editor-in-Chief, Sekati said:

“The growth and advancement of the PSLR is greatly attributed to the altruism and efforts of various stakeholders, and for those reasons, much appreciation is extended to PULP, the UP Deanery, our reviewers, and the outgoing Editorial Board. Your assistance and support has, with every year, placed us in the most favourable position to succeed in achieving our objectives and furthering our legacy. To the incoming Editorial Board, I wish you nothing but prosperity in your term. You are in excellent hands with your Guardian, Ms le Roux, and can always reach out to me should you require anything. To all aspiring authors, I hope that you have been inspired to write and submit to the PSLR. Your ideas are meaningful and invaluable, and you have everything it takes to be a published author. I wish you all the best with your writing journey.”
