The 5-day intensive Advanced Human Rights Course on the Protection of Forcibly displaced persons in Africa was held from 22 to 26 November 2021.
The Course provided an important opportunity for participants to explore key concepts in migration, the normative framework in place for the protection of forcibly displaced persons and stateless persons in Africa, and principles of protection (with a particular focus on human-rights based approach to durable solutions). The Course also presented lectures that aim to translate norms into action. In this regard, participants were familiarised with the judicial and quasi-judicial bodies of the African regional human rights system, and effective advocacy strategies for the protection of forcibly displaced persons.
Lectures were complemented by continuous exercises and class discussions, during which participants shared their experiences and perspectives, and critically reflected on discussion topics.
Lectures and discussions were attended by a diverse group of participants. There were a total of 50 participants from 24 countries. While most of them were from African countries, there were also participants from other regions of the world, including 1 participant from Asia, 4 participants from Europe, and 1 participant from the United States of America. Participants were also diverse in terms of their professional background, including professionals working in civil-society organisations, government departments on refugee status determination and immigration, academia, and media.
At the end of the course, participants were awarded certificates.
