The Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria (CHR), the Human Rights Institute of South Africa (HURISA) and the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) cordially invite you to a celebratory event to reflect on the contributions of South Africa and South Africans to the African Charter and its application and implementation.


 

Celebrating forty years of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights: South Africa’s contribution

To celebrate the adoption of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights on 27 June 1981, 40 years ago on 27 June 2021, a partnership between the Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria (CHR), the Human Rights Institute of South Africa (HURISA) and the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC), is hosting a celebratory event to reflect on the contributions of South Africa and South Africans to the African Charter and its application and implementation. The speakers at the event include South Africans who served as members of the two bodies that interpret and apply the African Charter, the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights and the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

The speakers at the event include South Africans who served as members of the two bodies that interpret and apply the African Charter, the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights and the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights: Professor Barney Pityana and Advocate Pansy Tlakula, who served as Commissioners of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights; and Judge Bernard Ngoepe, who served on the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights. Newly elected Judge Dumisa Ntsebeza will also be a speaker.
