The Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of Pretoria (UP), Professor Tawana Kupe, cordially invites you to a symposium in memory of Professor Christof Heyns, Professor of Human Rights Law at University of Pretoria.

Prof Heyns was many things to many people in various parts of the world. He was a devoted son, husband, father and grandfather, and a beloved, caring and inspirational friend, colleague, mentor and teacher. He was an international human rights icon, who left his mark as a United Nations (UN) special rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions, and as a member of the Human Rights Committee. Prof Heyns also played a role in the drafting of the South African Constitution. He was one of the founders of the Centre for Human Rights at UP, where he initiated innumerable and far-reaching projects as Director. During his time as Dean, he steered the Faculty of Law towards a greater focus on doctoral studies and internationalisation. Prof Heyns also founded the Institute for International and Comparative Law in Africa, from which he launched his impactful work on the right to life and peaceful assemblies.

We invite you to join us as we honour his memory.
