UP Law raises the bar again in respect of the number of degrees conferred in 2019

Posted on March 19, 2021

On 26 April 2018, the Faculty of Law (UP Law) at the University of Pretoria (UP) proudly stated that it experienced a remarkably successful 2017 academic year.  In this statement, UP Law confirmed the conferment of no less than 35 doctorates and 179 master’s degrees at the three graduation ceremonies in September and December 2017 and April 2018, hosted for students who fulfilled the requirements for their respective degrees during the 2017-academic year.

Today UP Law announces with pride that they have raised the bar far higher, as the Faculty has conferred a record number of 246 master’s degrees in the 2019 academic year.  UP Law also conferred 18 doctoral degrees, resulting in a total of 264 postgraduate degrees conferred in the 2019 academic year.  During the same period, the Faculty conferred 423 LLB degrees and thus a total of 687 lawyers graduated from UP Law during the 2019 academic year.

The infographic below reflects UP Law’s graduation statistics for the academic years 2016 to 2019.

In her note of appreciation to students, former management and staff, Dean Professor Elsabe Schoeman ‘thanked all involved in the ground-breaking 2019 outputs of UP Law.  We realise that without a doubt it must have taken a lot of hard work, exceptional commitment and dedication, and burning the midnight oil by all involved in the academic process from beginning to end.’   She continued by stating that ‘These statistics are proof that UP Law’s postgraduate outputs are closely aligned and intertwined with UP’s focus on research to leverage knowledge fields and research platforms, resulting in impressive research impact for the greater good of all national and international communities.’
