Posted on September 24, 2020

The first phase of the 2020 Nelson Mandela World Human Rights Moot Court Competition has been completed. From 19 to 23 September 2020, the preliminary rounds of the World Moot Court Competition for the first time ever took place virtually. Forty-three teams from all five United Nations regions participated in these rounds, which took place in English and Spanish.

The top eight teams from the preliminary rounds proceed to the quarter-final rounds. These rounds, as well as the semi-final and final rounds, are scheduled to take place in Geneva, in-person, from 7 to 11 December 2020. However, if travel restrictions do not allow for an in-person Moot Court final, the quarter-final, semi-final and final rounds will also take place virtually. The organisers will by mid October make a final announcement about the nature of the final round proceedings.

To mark the conclusion of the preliminary virtual rounds, an announcement ceremony will take place on Friday 25 September 2020 at 17:00 South African Standard Time/ Central European Time. This event will not only serve as a platform to announce the teams qualifying for the quarter-final rounds, but also to announce the top oralists and winning memorials in the various language groups.

The announcement ceremony will take place virtually via teleconferencing software (Zoom) and will be live streamed on Facebook and YouTube. The event is open to anyone interested to attend.
