After spending approximately four years at Webber Wentzel specialising in public interest and general commercial litigation, as well as a year as a researcher at the Parliament of South Africa, University of Pretoria (UP) Law alumnus Wesley Jonathan Timm pursued his master's studies abroad.
In May 2020, Timm completed the requirements for a Master of Public Administration (MPA) at the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University in the City of New York, as well as a Master of Public Policy (MPP) at Sciences Po School of Public Affairs, Paris. He spent a year in each city as part of a dual degree programme. Timm's MPA concentrated on economic and political development with a specialisation in international organisations, while his MPP focused on social policy and social innovation. His studies were supported by the Skye Foundation Scholarship, and the Oppenheimer Memorial Trust Scholarship.
Timm has now returned to South Africa to pursue a career in policy, and he 'hopes to contribute to the economic and social development of South Africa. I have a particular interest in poverty and inequality alleviation, as well as promoting the rule of law and good governance.’
While no longer a practising attorney, Timm remains passionate about public interest litigation, and public domestic and international law.
He first acquired this passion while studying at the University of Pretoria, where he obtained a BA (Law) in International Relations (with distinction) and an LLB (with distinction) in 2010 and 2012 respectively. In his final LLB year at UP, Timm received the Lexis Nexis Prize for the best final year mini-dissertation and participated in a supervised internship with the Institute of Comparative and International Law in Africain the Faculty of Law at UP.
