Gertrude Quan is a doctoral student affiliated with the SARChI Professorship in International Constitutional Law and has been awarded a six months scholarship by the prestigious Max Planck Institute Luxembourg for International, European and Regulatory Procedural Law.

Gertrude’s research thesis is entitled ‘A child-rights analysis of selected United Nations treaty body jurisprudence, to inform the emerging jurisprudence under the Third Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child’. Her supervisors are Professor Erika de Wet, SARChI Professor of International Constitutional Law at UP and Professor Ann Skelton, UNESCO Chair for Education Law in Africa and Member of the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child.

Gertrude is elated by this opportunity and is proud to continue with the tradition of academic achievements by fellow SARChI doctoral student, Kenneth Sithebe, who was awarded same scholarship in 2017 and 2019 and a scholarship from the Foundation Study Fund for South African Students between September 2017 and March 2018, at the University of Amsterdam. As well as (former) doctoral scholars within the SARChI team, Dr. Martha Bradley, who was one of only four recipients of the prestigious Hague Academy of International Law Doctoral Scholarships in 2017, while Dr. Jeanique Pretorius was awarded a Van Calker scholarship from the Swiss Institute of Comparative Law in 2016 and a Deutscher Akademischer Austauchdienst (DAAD) scholarship in 2016/17 respectively.
