Run at UP – Law lecturer Dr Llewelyn Curlewis successfully completes 25th Comrades Marathon

Posted on July 09, 2019

The Faculty of Law at the University of Pretoria (UP) congratulates senior lecturer Dr Llewelyn Curlewis in the Department of Procedural Law on completing his 25th Comrades Marathon on 9 June 2019 in seven hours, 45 minutes.*  There is reason to believe that he is the first UP athlete who has successfully completed consecutive 25 Comrades Marathons in the colours of UP with double green number 5977.

Dr Curlewis, former President of the Law Society of the Northern Provinces and renowned criminal lawyer, recalls that he has won seven silver medals over the years.

Dr Curlewis has run more than 250 marathons and ultra-marathons on local and international soil and has accrued more than 3 000 road running medals.  He does not plan to hang up his running shoes next to his toga soon.  ‘As long as I am physically capable of doing so I shall continue competing in the comrades Marathon and other road races.’

The theme of the ultimate human race this year was ‘Sizonqoba – together we triumph’.

According to The Witness, the Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) has confirmed that there will be two consecutive Down Runs in the years 2020 and 2021, as the body will be celebrating its centenary year in 2021.  ‘The Comrades Marathon also had double Down Runs in 2009 and 2010 because of the Fifa Confederations Cup and World Cup.’
