Posted on December 10, 2018

On 10 December 2018, staff of the Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria were at the University of Kwazunatal to mark the International Human Rights Day at the AfroGames 2018 which included a Symposium on ‘Decolonising of LGBTI rights in Africa’. The symposium of hosted by University of Kwazulu-Natal’s School of Law in collaboration with the AfroGames 2018.The symposium began with a key note address Justice Edwin Cameron. It was highlighted that this year 2018 is particularly important in the discourse on the human rights of LGBTI persons on the African continent because it jointly marks 70 years of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and 20 years of the passing of Simon Nkoli,  one of South Africa’s most celebrated LGBTI rights and anti-apartheid activist.

This was followed by panel discussion addressing one of the three themes each: ‘Recognition of LGBTI rights in Africa: a prerequisite for the full emancipation and decolonization of the continent’; ‘Decriminalisation of LGBTI in Africa: challenges, successes and strategies’; ‘ Faith, culture sports and tourism: tools for sustainable social transformation and cohesion of African communities’.
