About the Forum

Justice Johann van der Westhuizen, the founding Director of the Centre for Human Rights, Faculty of Law, University of Pretoria, at the end of February 2016 retired from the Constitutional Court, where he served from 2004 to 2016. Johann returns to the Centre as extraordinary professor, as the Centre commemorates 30 years since its establishment, in 1986. On 15 March 2016, in the run up to Human Rights Day (on 21 March), the Centre hosts an event to mark his return to the Centre, by providing a forum for reflection on his contributions to the Court. At this occasion, chaired by Deputy Chief Justice Dikgang Moseneke, a number of former colleagues (Justice Zak Yacoob and Justice Sisi Khampepe) would make introductory reflections, and one of his former clerks (James Fowkes) will present a paper about Johann’s judicial approach and contributions. Other former judicial colleagues will also attend the event. Members of the public are invited to attend.
