Two TuksLaw lecturers successfully completed the world's biggest and oldest ultra-marathon on Sunday, 31 May 2015.

Novice Prof Bernard Bekink (together with his spouse, Mildred Bekink) of the Department of Public Law and Prof Johan Lötz of the Department of Mercantile Law at the University of Pretoria, completed the 90th Comrades Marathon, which is widely referred to as The Ultimate Human Race.

Prof Bekink, participating in category the Men 40–49 years, covered the distance of 87,7 km in a net time of 11:42:10 and Prof Johan Lötz in the category Men 60+ years completed the race in a net time of 11:39:15. Both professors and Mrs Bekink completed the marathon in the officially permitted time and received the Vic Clapham medal for their achievements.

The first Comrades Marathon was held on 24 May 1921, Empire Day, starting outside the City Hall in Pietermaritzburg with 34 runners. Since then the race took place every year apart from 1941 to 1945 (during WWII), with the direction alternating each year between Pietermaritzburg and Durban, the so called ‘up and down runs’.  This year’s Comrades was an up run as it started in Durban.
