The annual TuksFM Woolly Winter campaign focusses on supporting and bringing relief to those in our community who are in need. In 2014 a total of 589 blankets, 655 food items, 1 484 items of clothing and more than R24 000 were raised. Organisations such as Child Welfare Tshwane, Boitumelo’s Children’s Home, Indaba Zosindiso Orphanage, Sunnyside Orphanage, President Kruger Children’s Home, the Community of Sant’Egidio and Angels without Wings benefitted from the donations received from staff and students. On 4 May 2015 TuksLaw’s Shadrack Mohlala (right above) delivered contributions to TuksFM on behalf of the Faculty of Law.
During the recent recurrence of xenophobic violence, BCom Marketing graduate and current LLB student in the Faculty of Law, Simone Jansen van Rensburg (right below), took action and collected donations of essential supplies from students and staff to give to displaced victims of xenophobia. Simone and friend Tamerin Jardine (Miss Earth SA 2012) took time from their busy schedules to encourage the public to make monetary contributions to Gift of the Givers and to deliver donated goods in support of Jacaranda FM’s #NoToXenophobia drive.
In a press statement made on 15 April 2015, the Centre for Human Rights called on the government and the ANC to effectively engage the South African public on this issue in order to curb and eradicate xenophobia and xenophobic violence in South Africa.
