FJ played TuksLaw rugby for many years and later served as chairperson of the TuksLaw rugby team. He committed himself heart, body and soul to every game that he and his teammates – all undergraduate or postgraduate students involved in legal practice – played for TuksLaw Rugby. According to the publisher, Naledi, Beseringstyd’ is 'an honest reflection of the inner circle of university rugby and the soul of a student rugby player'.
After attending the 2012 Tuks Creative Writing Winter School, FJ was hooked on writing. According to him, ’writing is obviously close to the character of any lawyer. Writing fiction was an extension of playing rugby. At Tuks I combined my two passions: law and rugby. Between reading and studying I realised that I could write a book – and I did!’
FJ will defend his doctoral thesis in November 2014. He is a senior associate in the Patent and Design Formalities Department of the international firm Spoor & Fisher. He specialises in the filing and prosecution of local patent and design applications, as well as patent and design records and formalities. He also has extensive experience in the area of transactional, commercial litigation and intellectual property enforcement, and was a contributor to the ‘Comparison table on IP rights in South Africa’ in the publication titled Overlapping Intellectual Property Rights (Oxford University Press, 2012, edited by Wilkof & Basheer).
