University’s Exceptional Academic Achievers awards
Professors Karin van Marle (Head of the Department of Jurisprudence) and Frans Viljoen (Director of the Centre for Human Rights) again received the University’s Exceptional Academic Achievers awards.
These awards recognise the excellent contribution that senior professors make to the development of research, teaching and learning, and community engagement. These awards are valid for three years.
NRF ratings maintained and increased
Professors André Boraine (Dean) and Frans Viljoen (Director of the Centre for Human Rights) improved from B2 to B1 rated researchers; Professor Philip Thomas (Department of Jurisprudence) from C1 to B3; and Professor Drucilla Cornell (Extraordinary Professor in the Department of Jurisprudence) has retained her A1 research rating.
The National Research Foundation’s (NRF) rating system is a key mechanism used by the University to identify excellence. The NRF rating system is a peer review process that enables the University to benchmark research at both national and international levels. It is a rigorous evaluation process and only about one tenth of all academic staff employed at South African universities have a rating. These awards are valid for five years.
Promotions
Four staff members will return with new designations to the Faculty in January 2013. They are Professors Bernard Bekink (Department Public Law) and Wium de Villiers (Procedural Law) who have been promoted to full professors, as well as Ms Hermie Coetzee (Mercantile Law), who has been promoted to Senior Lecturer. Professor Pieter Carstens has been appointed as Head of the Department Public Law.

Professor Karin van Marle has been appointed for another term as Head of the Department of Jurisprudence.
