Scholars at Risk: Academic Freedom Monitoring Workshop

Posted on April 08, 2013

The aim of the Academic Freedom Monitoring Workshop is to improve SAR’s monitoring and information distribution system which creates awareness of conducts which constitute violation of academic freedom and human rights of members of the academic institution.

Participants highlighted on some of the current attacks on higher education, spanning from violence against students in Afghanistan, China, Cote d’Ivoire, Sri Lanka and Syria; killings of students in Afghanistan and Syria; wrongful imprisonment and persecution of students in Côte d’Ivoire and Bahrain; Afghanistan university closures; and military use of higher education in Côte d’Ivoire.

Some of these attacks are directed at human rights defenders in higher education institutions, or individuals who advance human rights through their research, publications and teachings. Moreover, others are targeted due to their prominent reputation in the intellectual community or based on the content of their publications.

The group adopted several new measures such as creating a monitoring website, annual and special reports, effective verification of sources, enhancing research security and advocacy strategies for using monitoring data.
