Mandela Day: TuksLaw makes an imprint on the community

Posted on July 28, 2013

Back from their winter recess, TuksLaw students were part of the 61%* young South Africans aged between 18 and 24 years who participated in Mandela Day through their donations to the Faculty of Law’s “Randela”-collection in front of the Law Building.

Coupled by donations from staff, the Faculty of Law was able to purchase items on the wish lists of House Quanessa and the Sungardens Hospice
in Pretoria. The donations enabled TuksLaw to contribute to these non-profitable organisations in an endeavour to alleviate the plight of patients with progressive, far advanced, incurable diseases and mentally challenged children of all racial groups.  The Faculty appreciates and acknowledges the donations by staff and students.

Law House, the Faculty’s student house, also participated in Mandela Day by painting the Malerato Centre for Hope in Mamelodi.

The
United Nations officially declared 18 July as Nelson Mandela International Day in November 2009, recognising Mandela’s "values and his dedication to the service of humanity" and acknowledging his contribution "to the struggle for democracy internationally and the promotion of a culture of peace throughout the world".  Mandela Day is a call to action for individuals – for people everywhere – to take responsibility for changing the world into a better place, one small step at a time.  TuksLaw did just that!
