His Legacy will inspire generations to come and his speech at the Rivonia trial will reverberate forever – especially where sincere people are fighting a just cause – “During my lifetime I have dedicated myself to this struggle of the African people. I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die.”

We are grateful that we were able to pay tribute to him with an honorary doctorate degree. During his reception speech, he remarked as follows: "
I am honoured to be the recipient of an award through which you are paying tribute to our nation as a whole, for their achievement in overcoming our past of conflict and division and joining hands to work for shared ideals.  I humbly accept it in their name."
