Postgraduate Programmes: LLM/MPhil and LLD/PhD

Did you know that the Faculty of Law at the University of Pretoria offers a wide variety of postgraduate programmes on master's and doctoral level? On master's level (LLM/MPhil) we offer programmes through research and specialised programmes through coursework to local and foreign students. We also offer full-time or part-time doctoral degrees (LLD/PhD).

The Faculty of Law is widely recognised as a leader in the field of postgraduate programmes. The LLM/MPhil and LLD/PhD programmes presented by the Faculty enable students to specialise in their chosen fields by engaging with experts at an advanced level.

UP Law's LLM/MPhil programme through Coursework requires the

(a) Successful completion and assessment of three taught modules;

(b) Successful completion of the Research methodology Module; and

(c) The submission and successful completion of a research proposal and mini-dissertation within the prescribed period. 

(Virtual) class attendance is compulsory, usually once a week from 17:30 to 19:30. The duration is one or two years. 

 

Our LLM/MPhil programme through Research requires the

(a)  Successful completion of the prescribed Research Methodology Module; 

(b) Followed by the successful completion of an approved research proposal;

(c) Such dissertation is compiled under the auspices of a Faculty supervisor;  and

(d) Upon submission of the final dissertation, such dissertation is assessed by an assessment panel during an oral examination. 

 

UP Law's LLD/PhD programme entails the successful completion of:

(a)  A module on Research methodology;

(b)  Research proposal; 

(c)  Thesis under the guidance of a supervisor;  and

(c)  Oral examination.
