Market Research

Institutional Management Support

The Market Research Office within the Institutional Planning Department at the University of Pretoria (UP) serves its key function of informing strategic imperatives through providing up-to-date market management information regarding UP’s market environment, competitors and specific target markets. Project research outputs are used for addressing crucial strategic areas and formulating actionable recommendations for short and long-term planning.

This is done by conducting research which includes desk research, benchmark studies, market surveys, and internal operation and process assessments.

Internal Consulting Service

The Market Research Office may also provide internal consulting services to other departments within the University of Pretoria (UP) which seek to undertake market research surveys.

Services within this function include the following:

  1. Assistance with the development of market research proposals in order to ensure alignment with UP’s strategic objectives
  2. Assistance with the development of data collection strategies and recruitment methodologies
  3. Support with the analysis of project data
  4. Coordination of external entity appointments for research activities
  5. Support in ensuring compliance of market research with UP’s Information Governance and research-related policies

Management and Administration of Surveys

This Market Research office is also responsible for managing and administering institutional market research at the University of Pretoria (UP). This includes the following:

  • Management of applications and oversight of approval processes of surveys at UP

The Market Research Office acts as the single-entry point for all survey applications. All internal and external surveys which include UP staff, students, alumni and applicable stakeholders must be approved by the Institutional Survey Coordinating Committee via the Market Research Office.

In addition to the approvals necessitated by appropriate Faculty Research Ethics Committees, various policies and procedures must be adhered to in order to ensure compliance, high standards, ethical integrity, and value-driven research.

To apply for survey approval at UP, see the survey application process:

The Institutional Survery Coodinating Committee meets monthly. Applicants must submit relevant documentation no later than two weeks prior to a Committee meeting date. It is also important to note that the Committee may request a revised research/survey proposal and it is therefore recommended that applicants apply at least two months prior to the intended date of issuing the survey to its intended recipients.

Final submission dates for 2024 are as follows:

  • 25 January 2024
  • 21 March 2024
  • 25 April 2024
  • 25 May 2024
  • 20 June 2024
  • 31 July 2024
  • 22 August 2024
  • 26 September 2024
  • 24 October 2024
  • 22 November 2024

What to submit:

Submit this checklist and this data management plan with the research proposal, ethical approval letter and copy of the survey instrument via email to Carlien Nell.

Any enquiries related to the survey admissions may also be emailed to Carlien Nell.

  • Management and coordination of the survey register at UP

All surveys at UP must be registered at the Market Research Office. Once a survey is approved by both the Institutional Survey Coordinating Committee and the relevant Ethics Committee, the final approval documents must be submitted to the Market Research Office in the Department of Institutional Planning ([email protected]) to officially register the study and to finalise the survey procedures and the field work dates.

  • Administration of survey distribution at UP

The Market Research Office can publish a survey link on UP’s open-community portal for approved surveys by staff, students and organisations for internal and external academic, and non-academic research purposes.

In the case of institutional planning and development projects, the physical and/or electronic distribution of surveys will be managed by the Market Research Office.
