Department of Institutional Planning

Overview:

The Department of Institutional Planning, Monitoring, and Evaluation (DIP) co-ordinates, facilitates and promotes the strategic planning cycle at the University of Pretoria (UP). The department’s mission is to continuously re-imagine UP through the realisation of its strategic goals and objectives, providing support and advice through out the planning cycle. DIP serves all segments of the UP community, including academic staff, Deans, Heads of Departments (HODs), all levels of management, support professionals and students. 

In addition DIP, through its external reporting functions, serves the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), the Council on Higher Education (CHE), and South African Technology Network (SATN), among others. 

DIP functions are accomplished through the collection, analysis, interpretation and dissemination of information required for both planning and the assessment of institutional performance.

DIP Duties and Functions:

  • Institutional Research: The goal of Institutional Research (IR) is to support institutional learning, innovation and advancement by monitoring and evaluating progress in achieving the strategic plan's desired outcomes and impacts. IR promotes adaptive management for organisational learning and renewal by gathering, integrating and transforming data into information and knowledge for decision-making, planning and policy information. 

  • Reporting: The reporting arm of DIP has the primary responsibility of coordinating, preparing and submitting official reports on the University's performance against its strategic and annual plans, for Council oversight, enroute to DHET. 

  • Data Analytics: Data has been around long before computers, but technology has certainly accelerated the amount created every day. Educators, decision makers and stakeholders are leveraging data analytics program to identify institutional problems and spot opportunities for positive change. 

  • Market Research: The Market Research Office serves its key function of informing strategic imperatives through providing up-to-date market management information regarding UP's market environment, competitors and specific target markets. Project research outputs are used for addressing crucial strategic areas and formulating actionable recommendations for short and long-term planning. This is done by conducting research which includes desk research, benchmark studies, market surveys, and internal operation and process assessments.
