Research interests

Prof Vinesh Maharaj is a natural product chemist and is trained in the discovery of new drug leads based on biodiversity samples. This then led to him establishing himself as leading Bioprospecting in South Africa as well internationally, focusing on biodiversity and traditional knowledge being a source of new pharmaceuticals and now leads the Biodiscovery group in the department. A major project which he leads is the systematic investigation of thousands of indigenous plants as part of a multi-year project aimed at discovering drugs, nutraceuticals and cosmeceuticals from South Africa’s indigenous plants and is extensively involved in collaborative programmes with holders of indigenous knowledge such as traditional health practitioners.

The main focus of the Biodiscovery group is to create a unique repository of natural products in the Chemistry Department. A collection of samples comprising thousands of plant extracts and 10 000 dry plants are being is being used as the basis for the library. This is being converted into purified samples consisting of semi purified fractions and natural compounds stored in microtiter plates ready for high through-put screening purposes.  The infrastructure includes high end hyphenated analytical equipment such as HPLC MS, HPLC-MS-NMR as well as existing UPLC QTOF MS systems for the chemical characterization of the library while robotic liquid handlers and robotic freezers are used for the front-end management of the samples together with a database for future artificial intelligence purposes.
