During the afternoon show on 13 July, David O’Sullivan from Talk Radio 702 interviewed Priscilla Kershaw, a lecturer and student at the Centre for Augmentative and Alternative Communication. Earlier in the day, Priscilla emailed David about the alleged abuse at a Pretoria care centre for people with disabilities. Allegations came to light after parents suspected abuse of their own child. David and Priscilla discussed how communication boards that were developed, in part, by the CAAC can be used for people with disabilities who might be victims of abuse.

Priscilla, along with Prof Juan Bornman (CAAC, Univ of Pretoria) and Prof Diane Bryen (Temple University), developed Communication for ALL: You Can Tell and be Heard. These communication boards were developed for individuals with little to no functional speech in order to facilitate the disclosure of experiences of abuse. The boards can be used for both children and adults, they come with both male and female pictures, and in four different languages (Afrikaans, English, Sepedi, and isiZulu). There also is an alphabet version of the boards for people who are non-speaking but literate. They are currently available on the CAAC’s website.
