ALCRL celebrates its first PhD graduates

Posted on September 25, 2019

Drs René de Klerk and Elmé Vivier graduated alongside 14 other PhD students at the UP Faculty Economic and Management Sciences spring graduation ceremony in September 2019.

René de Klerk, who already holds BCom, LLB and LLM degrees, completed her thesis with the title  ‘The social construction of leadership: a follower-centric investigation into integrated reporting’. The findings of her study revealed that there is a leadership void in a disaggregated context. In this leadership void, followers are unable to follow because they are constrained by their own perceptions. These perceptions include perceptions of the self-concept, but more importantly, the perceptions are greatly influenced by governing rationalities.

Elmé Vivier, on the other hand, titled her thesis ‘Public leadership practices in participation: a social constructionist analysis of South African local government. Elmé holds a bachelor’s degree in political science and a master’s in philosophy. Her study contributes to public leadership theory by illuminating the complex interplay between individual leader agency and broader structural influences, and points to the importance of a multi-level of leadership and how social change happens.

Both graduates were supervised by Prof Derick de Jongh, Director of the Albert Luthuli Centre for Responsible Leadership, and he couldn’t be happier. “We are incredibly proud of the ALCRL’s first cohort of PhD graduates, not only for their individual accomplishments, but also as their success indicates what the Centre has collectively achieved,” said Prof De Jongh.
