Professional and academic experience

  • 2002 - 2016      Deputy Director, National Institute for Communicable Disease (NICD).  Founding head, Public Health Surveillance and Response Division since its establishment in 2004. The Division includes surveillance, outbreak response, travel medicine and clinical infectious diseases.
  • 1995 – 2001:     Head of the TB Reference Laboratory, National Health Laboratory Service, Johannesburg
  • 1991 – 1994:     Registrar in microbiology, Division of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, University of the Witwatersrand
  • 1988 – 1991:     Principal Medical Officer, Rietfontein (now Sizwe) Tropical Diseases Hospital, Johannesburg (part-time position at Sizwe Hospital 1991-2002)

  • 2006 – present:  Member of the Rabies Advisory Group (RAG) to the National Dept of Health2015 – present:            WHO Scientific Advisory Group for the Blueprint on Research and Development Preparedness for emerging pathogens (Ebola, Lassaa, Congo, Rift Valley Fvere), which conducted the following activities: 1) prioritisation of emerging diseases for preparedness planning, 2) research and development pertaining to vaccines and therapy, 3) developing of funding opportunities to support preparedness activities.
  • 2012 - present:    Elected Chairman of the SA Malaria Elimination Committee
  • 2015 – present:  WHO International Health Regulations emergency committee pertaining to EVD, which had responsibility for declaration and rescinding the status of ‘Public Health Emergency of International Concern’ in respect of the Ebola virus outbreak in West Africa (2014-2016)
  • 2015 – present:  EDCARN: a clinical network with global representation under the aegis of the WHO epidemic response cluster which focuses on providing clinical guidelines for the management of epidemic – prone diseases mainly the viral haemorraghic fevers
  • 2015 – present:  Elected Chair (2017) to the WHO scientific and technical advisory group on yellow fever risk mapping. 
  • 2016 – present:  Editorial Board of the journal, Tropical Medicine and Infectious Disease
  • 2016 – present:  Member of Strategic Advisory Group of Experts (SAGE) on Immunization Working Group on rabies vaccines and rabies immunoglobulins
  • 2017 – present:  WHO International Health Regulations  (IHR) Emergency Committee for Ebola Virus Disease (DRC outbreak)
  • 2017 – present:  Editor for the International Journal of Infectious Diseases (1 of three editors)
  • 2018 – present:  African Advisor for the International Journal of Travel Medicine
  • 2019 (3-years):  Lancet Commission on One Health (The principle objective of the Commission is to synthesize current evidence on One Health for timely policy translation at local and global levels.)
