A Day in the Life of the University of Pretoria. 08 July 1966

Posted on May 31, 2023

On this "Day in the life of the University of Pretoria" Tukkies men criticized the clothes worn by their fellow female students.

The Rand Daily Mail reported that UP male students were highly critical of UP’s female fashion. They critiqued the knee length white socks that female students wore in winter. Male students also described the ladies’ wardrobes as “tent-like”, “unsightly plastic coats” and as too provocative for church. In a counter-attack female students labelled UP male students as boorish students who “do not know how to treat ladies” and wore “unsightly beards”.

The University of Pretoria Archives (UPA) preserves the history of the University of Pretoria. The UPA has an extensive photo collection and clipping collection. Please contact us on [email protected] to share your memories of Tukkies or to access our collection.
