On this "Day in the life of the University of Pretoria" a UP professor was critiqued (and eventually left UP) because of his liberal views.
In a shocking article in Pro Veritate professor of Semitic languages, Adrianus van Selms, critiqued the Christian nature of the pro-Afrikaner government and the Afrikaner nation. He questioned the Christian nature and the calling of the Afrikaner nation. Van Selms was also very critical of preachers in the Dutch Reformed Church. Tukkies students claimed that he openly questioned the separate development policies of the government during his lectures. Many of his peers did not agree with his views and condemned Van Selms as a fatalist. An article in one of the local newspapers, Dagbreek, asked whether a lecturer with these view should teach at an Afrikaans university like UP.
The University of Pretoria Archives (UPA) preserves the history of the University of Pretoria. The UPA has an extensive photo collection and clipping collection. Please contact us on [email protected] to share your memories of Tukkies or to access our collection.
