A day in the life at the University of Pretoria. 26 May 2020

On this "Day in the life of the University of Pretoria" the Cape Times  newspaper reported on the team of volunteers at UP who helped produced low-cost spacers to ease asthma during die COVID-19 pandemic

The newspaper noted that UP professors Robin Green, Izelle Smuts and Ronel Herselman where part of the volunteer group that produced 20 000 spacers in Gauteng. The paper explained that asthma medication was traditionally self-administered, using a handheld inhaler. Because the nebulizer sprays the patient’s breadth into the air using the inhaler by itself can spread contagious disease by allowing the patients to breathe directly into the air. A custom blow-mold base allowed medication to be pumped through an empty chamber, reaching the patients lungs without spraying droplets into the air. This small accessory added an inhaler sized hole that can be attached to a plastic bottle.

The UPA preserves the history of the University of Pretoria. We have an extensive photo collection as well as earlier copies of the Senate, Council and Faculty minutes. We also have an extensive clipping collection in our holdings, as featured here.
