On this "Day in the life of the University of Pretoria" UP reported on the expansion of the campus’s electricity grid.

According to the student newspaper the Perdeby,  it was reported that at the beginning of 1956 one power substation had to provide electricity to all the faculties and laboratories. This substation only had a single transformer capable of 11 500 volts 500 kVA and could whole insufficient for the expanding campus activities. To address the electricity, demand an additional transformer was added to the one behind the College building. A second substation was also installed near the Engineering Faculty. Secondary power was also changed from 250/440 to 230/440 volt making it more suitable for use in the laboratories.
